MuSeenLandschaft Expressionism: Schloßmuseum Murnau - Franz Marc Museum

4:55 h 459 hm 459 hm 63,9 km moderate

A cycling route for connoisseurs who love both nature and culture equally! It starts at the Schloßmuseum Murnau.

Past the famous Münterhaus you roll down into the Murnauer Moos. A detour via the hamlet Grafenaschau leads to Eschenlohe. A few minutes further north, the next highlight waits: the Kaulbachhaus in Ohlstadt. Then you continue following the Loisach to Lake Kochel – and visit the Franz Marc Museum in Kochel. For the return trip to Murnau, you should still save some strength, as a few elevation meters await you on the ridge Steinbruchleiten.

Art and nature enjoyment – between Munich and the Alpine foothills

Upper Bavaria like from a picture book. Picturesque places, beer gardens, baroque churches, Lüftl painting – a fascinating holiday experience against the majestic backdrop of the Bavarian Alps. Nowhere in Germany does a landscape combine art and nature enjoyment as intensely as between Munich and the Alpine foothills. Five museums await cyclists offering a concentrated and high-quality overview of German Expressionism. Particularly in the Alpine foreland, it is advisable to combine museum visits with impressive bike rides. A bike route following the tracks of the »Blue Rider« leads through the landscape that already inspired Franz Marc, Gabriele Münter, and Wassily Kandinsky.

This route is part of a comprehensive tour offering within the MuSeenLandschaft Expressionismus:

A multi-day bike circular route starts in Munich at the Lenbachhaus and then loops through the MuSeenLandschaft via Bernried on Lake Starnberg (Buchheim Museum), Murnau (Schlossmuseum and Münter Haus), Kochel (Franz Marc Museum), and Penzberg (Museum Penzberg – Campendonk Collection).

Besides the multi-day stage tour, there are also four elaborated circular routes through the MuSeenLandschaft, starting at the four museum locations. These individual loops are modularly built, offering options both for (shorter) multi-day routes as well as for single day loops. This way, not only can the different museums be connected, but also the landscapes encountered on the connecting routes, which inspired the artists for their works, can be experienced.

All start locations have a train station, so that the routes can be combined freely, regardless of the starting point.

Sicherheitshinweise:

Consideration keeps paths wide

Please note that in our region you often cycle on agricultural paths. You are very welcome on these paths, but of course these paths are also used by farmers with their vehicles to manage the fields. Due to the width of the vehicles, the paths can get narrow sometimes. The paths remain wide enough if all users show consideration for each other and make way by moving aside when necessary. Please be aware that the large machines often cannot leave the paths to the sides. Therefore, as cyclists, please move aside when it gets tight!

Thank you very much for your understanding and consideration for the people who have to work here!

Use of paths along rivers

We are pleased that the Water Authority Weilheim has created embankment paths along the rivers, which may also be used by cyclists.

Please note that these paths were created for water management purposes and do not always meet the quality requirements for cycle paths. Especially after construction work, flood events, and storms (fallen trees) the paths may have damage or impassable sections. Furthermore, occasional construction traffic is to be expected.

Please use the paths with due caution and observe the local traffic signs! Use of the maintenance paths is at your own risk.
