MuSeenLandschaft Expressionism: Buchheim Museum - Castle Museum Murnau - Museum Penzberg

This 72-kilometer section between the three museums can technically be mastered in one day. For e-bikers, even effortlessly.

However, it is an individual decision which of the three museums along the way should be visited extensively. Those who want to visit all three museums should plan two daily stages. Topography: Only between Murnau and Sindelsdorf are there some noticeable climbs. Otherwise flat to hilly.

Art and nature enjoyment - between Munich and the edge of the Alps

Upper Bavaria like from a picture book. Picturesque places, beer gardens, baroque churches, Lüftl painting – a fascinating holiday experience against the majestic backdrop of the Bavarian Alps. Nowhere in Germany is there a landscape that combines art and nature enjoyment as intensely as between Munich and the Alpine foothills. Five museums await cyclists where they can get a concentrated and high-quality overview of German Expressionism. Especially in the Alpine foothills, it is advisable to combine museum visits with impressive bike rides. A bike route following in the footsteps of the ‘Blue Rider‘ leads through the landscape that already inspired Franz Marc, Gabriele Münter, and Wassily Kandinsky.

This tour is part of an overall tour offering in the MuSeenLandschaft Expressionism:

A multi-day bike round trip starts in Munich at the Lenbachhaus and then makes a loop through the MuSeenLandschaft via Bernried at Lake Starnberg (Buchheim Museum), Murnau (Castle Museum and Münter House), Kochel (Franz Marc Museum), and Penzberg (Museum Penzberg - Campendonk Collection).

In addition to the multi-day stage tour, there are also four elaborated circular routes through the MuSeenLandschaft that start at the four museum locations. These individual loops are modular, offering options for (shorter) multi-day tours as well as single daily loops. This way not only the different museums can be connected, but also the landscapes can be experienced on the connecting stretches that inspired the artists in their works.

All starting points have a train station, so the tours can be combined arbitrarily regardless of the starting point.

Sicherheitshinweise:

Consideration keeps paths wide

Please note that in our region you often ride on agricultural paths. You are warmly welcome on these paths, but of course these paths are also used by farmers with their vehicles to manage the land. Due to the width of the vehicles, it can sometimes get tight on the paths. The paths remain wide enough if all users consider each other and, if necessary, also move aside and make room for other users. Please note that large machines often cannot drive off the paths. Therefore, as a cyclist, please move aside if it gets tight!

Thank you very much for your understanding and consideration for the people who have to work here!

Wegbeschreibung:

The route starts at the Buchheim Museum and leads past the Osterseen through picturesque peat landscapes and small villages to Lake Staffel in Murnau. Among others, Kandinsky, Münter, Marianne von Werefkin, and Alexej Jawlensky worked here, whose works can be admired in the Castle Museum Murnau. Also visit the Münter House, where Münter and Kandinsky lived from 1909 to 1914. From there, it goes along the edge of the Loisach-Kochelsee moors to Sindelsdorf. Here the bike path goes through the picturesque village, the cradle and home of the artist group ‘The Blue Rider,‘ to the places where these – especially Franz Marc – lived, found their motifs, and created their works. Then it continues to Penzberg, the workplace of the painter Heinrich Campendonk. An extraordinary collection of the youngest member of the ‘Blue Rider‘ can be seen in the Museum Penzberg - Campendonk Collection. He translated the ideas of the avant-garde into a magical world of motifs and colors and developed an amazing luminous reverse glass technique. From Penzberg, the route leads through the area of the picturesque Osterseen, which enchant as a national geotope at the southern end of Lake Starnberg with the treasures of nature. Then it goes back to Lake Starnberg and via Seeshaupt to Bernried.
